The big change: no more private listings
CarsGuide’s own Sell My Car page states that listing your car for sale is no longer available on the site. Private sellers are directed to Gumtree ("reach millions of buyers") or to Fast Car Offer, its instant cash-buyer service. Both routes stay inside the same corporate family — Gumtree Australia Markets (ASX: GUM) owns Gumtree, CarsGuide and Autotrader.
This tripped up a lot of sellers following older advice. If a 2023-era guide told you to list on CarsGuide for free, that option is gone; the site is now a dealer marketplace plus an editorial machine.
What’s still useful: research and valuation
CarsGuide’s content library is its real asset: 12,000+ independent reviews, buying guides, awards and utility tools (towing capacity, dimensions, tyre pressures) that pull an estimated ~6.4 million monthly visits, most of it from organic search. For a seller, the free price guide — enter make, model and year for an estimated market and trade-in value, updated monthly — is a quick, no-signup sanity check on your asking price.
Fast Car Offer
Fast Car Offer is the instant-cash path shared with sibling Autotrader: enter rego, state and kilometres; a verified buyer makes an offer; inspection happens at your home or location; payment can land in as little as 24 hours, with paperwork and even finance-payout letters handled. Complaint themes suggest offers come in low against expectations — normal for the category — so treat it as one quote among several, not the answer.
