Overview
Kia’s transformation over the past decade has been remarkable: from budget alternative to genuine class contender, on the strength of striking design and — crucially for used buyers — a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty that the rest of the market has spent years catching up to. It finished fourth among all brands in Australia in 2025.
The Sportage sits at the centre of the range, sharing its engineering with the Hyundai Tucson while looking entirely different. The Cerato, Seltos, Carnival and EV6 round out a lineup with no obvious weak links, and every model sold here gets a local ride-and-handling tune.
History
Founded in May 1944 as Kyungsung Precision Industry, making steel tubing and bicycle parts, and building South Korea’s first domestic bicycle in 1951. The name comes from Chinese characters meaning roughly "to arise" and "Asia". Licensed Honda motorcycles followed from 1957 and Mazda-based trucks and cars from the 1960s and 1970s.
Bankruptcy during the 1997 Asian financial crisis led to Hyundai acquiring 51 per cent in 1998. The single most consequential hire came in 2006: Peter Schreyer, formerly of Audi, as chief design officer. His "Tiger Nose" grille gave Kia a face, and the brand has led on design ever since. It renamed itself from Kia Motors to Kia Corporation in January 2021 and now sells over three million cars a year.
Buying a used Kia
The seven-year warranty is the reason to shop Kia second-hand. A two-to-three-year-old car can arrive with four or more years of factory cover remaining, transferable to you, provided servicing has been done on schedule — so check the book before anything else.
Servicing is straightforward through a growing national dealer network with capped prices, and reliability records are strong. For buyers who want maximum car and maximum remaining warranty per dollar, a recent used Kia is one of the most rational choices on the market.
