Overview
Ford’s modern Australian story is written by one nameplate: Ranger. Engineered and tuned locally at the You Yangs proving ground near Geelong, it has become one of the country’s best-selling vehicles outright, spanning work-spec single cabs through to the desert-bred Ranger Raptor. That local development shows in how the vehicle rides on Australian roads — a genuine point of difference among utes.
Ford finished second among all brands sold in Australia in 2025, on the strength of the Ranger and Everest. Mustang keeps the performance halo alive.
History
Henry Ford founded the company in Detroit on 16 June 1903 with $28,000 from twelve investors. The Model T of 1908 and the first moving assembly line at Highland Park in 1913 did more to shape the twentieth century than any other pair of industrial decisions — Ford did not invent the car, but he made it something an ordinary wage could buy.
Later milestones: laminated safety glass on the 1927 Model A, the first affordable V8 in 1932, and the Mustang, unveiled at the New York World’s Fair on 17 April 1964. Ford sold Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata in 2008 and today runs its business as Ford Blue, Ford Model E and Ford Pro.
In Australia
Ford Australia manufactured here for 91 years. The Broadmeadows assembly plant and the Geelong engine plant both closed in October 2016, and the last car — a blue Falcon XR6, the world’s final six-cylinder rear-wheel-drive Falcon — came off the line on 7 October 2016.
Engineering did not leave with manufacturing. The You Yangs proving ground, 900 hectares with more than 80 kilometres of test tracks, remains the home room for the global T6 Ranger programme; the current Ranger is designed and engineered out of Ford’s Campbellfield offices in Melbourne and sold in 180 markets.
Buying a used Ford
The Ranger’s popularity is your friend on the used market: huge volumes mean choice at every price point, strong parts availability and a deep accessory ecosystem for canopies, tubs and towing gear. XLT and Wildtrak grades hit the sweet spot of equipment for money; the Raptor is a performance vehicle that happens to be a ute.
Check the usual ute boxes — evidence of heavy towing, underbody condition on off-road-used examples, and a complete service history. Falcons remain plentiful and cheap, and the XR6 Turbo in particular is a lot of car for the money, but check for modifications and confirm the cooling system has been maintained.
