Overview
Tesla reshaped the Australian electric vehicle market almost single-handedly. The Model 3 and Model Y are among the country’s best-selling electric cars, and the Supercharger network — the most extensive fast-charging network in Australia — remains a genuine ownership advantage that used buyers inherit at no extra cost.
The cars are unusual in being defined largely by software. Over-the-air updates mean an older Tesla keeps gaining features, so a 2021 build can feel surprisingly current.
History
Tesla was founded on 1 July 2003 in San Carlos, California by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Elon Musk joined in February 2004 as chairman after leading the Series A round, and became chief executive in October 2008. The first Roadster was delivered that year.
The Model S followed in June 2012, the Model X in September 2015, the Model 3 in July 2017 and the Model Y in March 2020. The Supercharger network opened on 24 September 2012 with six Californian stations and has grown to roughly 7,900 sites worldwide. Tesla’s June 2010 IPO was the first by an American automaker since Ford in 1956, and the company reached a trillion-dollar market capitalisation in October 2021. BYD passed it in global electric vehicle sales in 2025.
Buying a used Tesla
A used Tesla is a different proposition from a used petrol car. There is no engine or transmission to wear out; the battery and drive units are the long-lived core, and Australian data shows Tesla packs typically retain around 90 per cent of their capacity after 200,000 km.
When shopping, check the indicated range against the original specification, and confirm whether Autopilot or Full Self-Driving options are attached to the car — some software options do not transfer between owners, so verify rather than assume. Rear-wheel-drive variants use LFP batteries that are happy being charged to 100 per cent daily, which suits commuters.
