Overview
Hyundai earned its place among Australia’s top-selling brands the hard way: consistent value, a warranty that reset market expectations, and a dedicated local suspension-tuning programme so that cars sold here are calibrated for Australian roads. It finished fifth among all brands in 2025.
The i30 has been a small-car staple for well over a decade, with the Tucson and Kona carrying the SUV load and the Ioniq range — particularly the Ioniq 5 — establishing genuine electric credibility.
History
Chung Ju-yung founded Hyundai Motor Company on 29 December 1967. The first model, the 1968 Cortina, was built under licence from Ford. The breakthrough was the 1975 Pony — South Korea’s first indigenous car, styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro with Mitsubishi powertrain technology. Exports began in 1976, the UK followed in 1982, and the US in February 1986 with the Excel.
Quality was the weak point for two decades, and fixing it was a deliberate corporate project from 1998 under Chung Mong-koo. By 2004 Hyundai ranked second in J.D. Power initial-quality studies. It is now the world’s third-largest carmaker by production, behind Toyota and Volkswagen, and owns roughly a third of Kia.
Buying a used Hyundai
Hyundai Australia moved to a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty from 2025, matching Kia — so a recent used car may still carry several years of factory cover, and it transfers to you. Check the remaining term and that servicing has been done on schedule to keep it valid.
Ownership is drama-free: capped-price servicing, a dealer in virtually every regional centre, and strong parts availability keep costs predictable. The i30 is the used market’s all-rounder, and the i30 N Line adds turbocharged urgency without full hot-hatch running costs. It is hard to buy a used Hyundai badly, which is exactly why they make such reliable first cars and family second cars.
