Overview
BMW built its reputation on the phrase "the ultimate driving machine", and the engineering underneath still supports it — longitudinal engines, a rear-biased chassis, and steering that tells you what the front tyres are doing. The 3 Series has been the class benchmark for sports sedans since 1975, with the X3 and X5 carrying the same brief into SUVs.
The M division sits above all of it. M2, M3 and M4 remain among the most desirable performance cars you can buy at any price, and their straight-six engines are a signature no rival has matched.
History
BMW dates itself to 1916, though the company as it exists was assembled from several Bavarian aviation firms by 1922. The name is simply Bayerische Motoren Werke — Bavarian Motor Works — and the roundel evolved from the Rapp Motorenwerke logo, its blue and white quarters echoing the Bavarian coat of arms. Early products were aircraft engines; the first motorcycle, the R32, arrived in 1923, and the first car, the 3/15, in 1928.
The company nearly ceased to exist in 1959 and was saved by investment from Herbert and Harald Quandt. What followed justified the rescue: the New Class of 1962 established BMW as a maker of sport-oriented saloons, and the 5 Series (1972), 3 Series (1975) and 7 Series (1978) built the modern range. M was founded as a division in 1978 with the mid-engined M1. BMW bought the Rover Group in 1994, kept only Mini when it broke the business up in 2000, and secured the rights to the Rolls-Royce name in 1998.
Buying a used BMW
Used BMWs offer serious value because depreciation on German luxury cars is severe in the first three years. Second-hand buyers routinely pick up cars with adaptive suspension, head-up displays and premium audio for the price of a mid-size SUV. M Sport packages are close to ubiquitous in the Australian market and lift both the look and the resale.
Do the due diligence the badge deserves. A full service history — ideally BMW dealer or marque specialist — is non-negotiable, and a pre-purchase inspection pays for itself. Well-kept examples are robust; neglected ones are expensive. Buy on condition and history, not on price alone.
