Overview

Mazda consistently ranks among Australia’s most-loved brands, holding a top-three sales position for years — third overall in 2025 — on the strength of a simple formula: handsome design, interiors that punch above their price, and mechanical simplicity. While rivals chased small turbocharged engines, Mazda largely stuck with naturally aspirated SkyActiv petrol engines and conventional automatics, a combination that has proven exceptionally durable.

The CX-5 is the heart of the range and one of the smartest used-SUV buys in the country. The Mazda3 and CX-3 offer the same virtues in smaller packages, and the MX-5 remains the definitive affordable sports car.

History

Founded in Hiroshima on 30 January 1920 by Jujiro Matsuda as Toyo Cork Kogyo — a cork manufacturer. The name draws on Ahura Mazda, the Zoroastrian deity, and on the founder’s surname; the company describes it as a symbol of harmony, intelligence and wisdom. Vehicle production began with the Mazda-Go three-wheeled truck in 1931.

Two engineering decisions define the marque. The rotary engine, launched in the 1967 Cosmo Sport, made Mazda the only company ever to sell Wankel-engined cars in volume — and, with the 787B’s outright victory at Le Mans in 1991, the only non-piston-engined car ever to win there. The second was the MX-5 of 1989, which single-handedly revived the affordable roadster. Ford held a controlling interest from 1996 until it sold its last shares in September 2015; SkyActiv was announced in 2011.

Buying a used Mazda

Used buyers benefit from Mazda’s strong reliability record and reasonable servicing costs through a nationwide dealer network. Resale values are firm — you rarely steal a Mazda — but what you pay for is a car that keeps feeling premium well past 150,000 km.

On the CX-5 and Mazda3, check the service book and look for evidence of regular oil changes on the diesel variants. Rotary-engined RX-7 and RX-8 models are a different proposition entirely: budget for a compression test before purchase and understand that the engine is a consumable.
