Overview
Mercedes-Benz has been the benchmark for European luxury for generations. The three-pointed star still signals engineering depth: refined turbocharged engines, class-leading cabin technology, and safety systems that filter down from the S-Class flagship to the C-Class and A-Class within a generation.
It became the world’s largest premium vehicle brand in 2018, at 2.31 million cars. AMG covers performance, Maybach ultra-luxury, and EQ the electric range.
History
The company descends from two men who, in 1886 and independently of one another, built the first practical motor cars: Karl Benz, whose Patent-Motorwagen is recognised as the first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine, and Gottlieb Daimler with Wilhelm Maybach, who fitted a petrol engine to a stagecoach. No other carmaker can claim to have invented the thing outright.
The Mercedes name arrived separately. Emil Jellinek, an Austrian businessman selling Daimlers, registered it in 1902 after his daughter Mercédès. The Daimler and Benz companies merged on 28 June 1926, and the first Mercedes-Benz cars followed. The safety record is the deepest part of the engineering story: the crumple zone, anti-lock brakes and the airbag were all brought to production here.
Buying a used Mercedes-Benz
Buying used is the smart way into the brand. Mercedes models carry steep initial depreciation, which means a three-to-five-year-old C300 or GLC can be had for a fraction of its original driveaway price while still feeling every bit the modern luxury car. AMG Line trim — sports styling, bigger wheels, upgraded interior — is common in the Australian market and worth seeking out.
Service history matters more here than with mainstream brands: insist on a complete book, preferably from a Mercedes-Benz dealer or a recognised European specialist, and budget for consumables like brakes and tyres that cost more than their Toyota equivalents. A well-maintained example rewards you with an ownership experience mainstream badges cannot match.
