Pros and cons
Pros
- Huge independent editorial library (12,000+ reviews) — genuinely useful research
- Free low-friction valuation tool (make/model/year)
- Fast Car Offer: rego-in, verified buyer offer, at-home inspection, paid in as little as 24h
Cons
- Private classifieds are discontinued — you cannot run your own ad here anymore
- 1.4/5 on ProductReview with systemic fake-listing complaint themes
- Sellers are handed off to Gumtree or an instant offer, ceding the private-sale relationship
The big change: no more private listings
CarsGuide’s own Sell My Car page states that listing your car for sale is no longer available on the site. Private sellers are directed to Gumtree ("reach millions of buyers") or to Fast Car Offer, its instant cash-buyer service. Both routes stay inside the same corporate family — Gumtree Australia Markets (ASX: GUM) owns Gumtree, CarsGuide and Autotrader.
This tripped up a lot of sellers following older advice. If a 2023-era guide told you to list on CarsGuide for free, that option is gone; the site is now a dealer marketplace plus an editorial machine.
What’s still useful: research and valuation
CarsGuide’s content library is its real asset: 12,000+ independent reviews, buying guides, awards and utility tools (towing capacity, dimensions, tyre pressures) that pull an estimated ~6.4 million monthly visits, most of it from organic search. For a seller, the free price guide — enter make, model and year for an estimated market and trade-in value, updated monthly — is a quick, no-signup sanity check on your asking price.
Fast Car Offer
Fast Car Offer is the instant-cash path shared with sibling Autotrader: enter rego, state and kilometres; a verified buyer makes an offer; inspection happens at your home or location; payment can land in as little as 24 hours, with paperwork and even finance-payout letters handled. Complaint themes suggest offers come in low against expectations — normal for the category — so treat it as one quote among several, not the answer.
MotorLoop vs CarsGuide
Our platform, disclosed. MotorLoop runs this site. This section is our own pitch, not part of the review above.
The thing to understand about CarsGuide is that it is no longer a private selling venue. Its sell flow hands you to Gumtree or to a Fast Car Offer instant quote, so the traffic figure attached to the brand is a research audience rather than one that will ever see your ad.
MotorLoop is our own marketplace, and it does take private listings — free, with no tier to choose and no fee at the end. An AI assistant drafts the ad from your photos and notes, buyers message and send offers in-app so your number stays private, and the car gets a showcase page with a virtual plate watermarked onto the photos. Our buyer pool is smaller than the incumbents’ and we are upfront about that. But the comparison on this page is between a free ad you can actually run and a large audience you cannot list to.
CarsGuide FAQs
Can I still list my car on CarsGuide?
No. Private listings are discontinued; the sell page routes you to Gumtree or to the Fast Car Offer instant-cash service.
Is the CarsGuide valuation accurate?
It’s an estimate built from industry data and on-site listing prices, updated monthly — good for a sanity check, but confirm against live listings for your exact car and kilometres.
Our verdict
Not a private selling venue anymore. Use its valuation and reviews for free research, take a Fast Car Offer quote as a speed benchmark, and list the car itself on an actual classifieds platform.
