Overview
Acura is Honda’s luxury division, and it holds a place in history as the first premium brand launched by a Japanese carmaker. The formula has stayed consistent since 1986: Honda engineering — high-revving engines, sharp front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive chassis, obsessive build quality — wrapped in a more expensive, better-equipped package. The tagline "Precision Crafted Performance" is a fair description of what the cars actually feel like.
The range today centres on the MDX and RDX SUVs, the revived Integra, and a Type S performance line that has restored some of the sharpness the brand traded away in the 2000s. Acura is sold in North America rather than Australia, so local examples are private imports.
History
Acura launched on 27 March 1986 with two cars: the executive Legend and the compact Integra. The strategy was a response to Japanese export restraints — if the number of cars you can ship is capped, sell more expensive ones. It worked immediately: 109,000 sales in the first full year, ahead of Mercedes-Benz and BMW in luxury market share.
The 1990 NSX was the turning point that mattered most. Developed with input from Ayrton Senna, it was the world’s first all-aluminium production car and the first Japanese machine credibly compared to Ferrari and Porsche. Acura lost its way in the mid-to-late 1990s when heritage model names were replaced with alphanumerics — Legend became "3.5 RL" and buyers stopped caring — before the TL and MDX rebuilt the brand from 2000.
