Overview
Alfa Romeo builds cars for people who will forgive a lot in exchange for feel. Steering, engine note and body control have always come first; cupholders and cabin ergonomics have always come second. The modern range — Giulia sedan, Stelvio SUV, Tonale crossover — is the most credible the brand has been in decades, and the Giulia Quadrifoglio in particular is regarded as one of the great modern sports sedans.
The badge itself tells the Milanese story: a red cross and the biscione, a crowned serpent, both drawn from the city’s medieval heraldry.
History
The company was founded in Milan on 24 June 1910 as A.L.F.A. — Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. Nicola Romeo took control in 1915 and gave the marque the second half of its name by 1920. Its first model was the 24 HP, designed by Giuseppe Merosi.
Racing made the reputation. Alfa won the inaugural World Manufacturers’ Championship in 1925, and a young Enzo Ferrari ran the works racing operation before leaving to build cars under his own name. Alfa then won the first two Formula One World Championships outright — Giuseppe Farina in 1950, Juan Manuel Fangio in 1951. The road cars that followed, the Giulietta of 1954 and the Giulia of 1962, brought that engineering down to a price ordinary drivers could reach. Government-controlled from 1933, the marque passed to Fiat in 1986 and now sits within Stellantis.
Buying a used Alfa Romeo
Buy on service history, not on price. Alfa’s reliability reputation is worse than its modern record deserves, which means depreciation is steep and a well-kept Giulia or Stelvio can be extraordinary value second-hand. That same reputation means a neglected one is genuinely expensive to put right.
Insist on a complete book from a franchised dealer or a recognised European specialist, and budget for consumables at European rather than mainstream prices. A pre-purchase inspection is money well spent on any Alfa.
