Overview

AM General builds military vehicles, and it built the one everybody recognises: the HMMWV, universally called the Humvee. Its civilian spin-off became Hummer.

History

The company descends from Willys-Overland via Kaiser and American Motors, which made its General Products Division a wholly owned subsidiary and renamed it AM General Corporation in 1971. Ownership passed to LTV in 1983, Renco in 1992, MacAndrews & Forbes in 2004 and KPS Capital Partners in 2020.

The decisive moment was winning the 1983 contract for roughly 55,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles, with production starting at Mishawaka, Indiana in autumn 1984; close to 250,000 have been built. AM General launched the civilian Hummer in 1992, sold the brand rights to General Motors in 1999, and continued to manufacture the H1 to 2006 and the H2 from 2002 to 2009.
