Aston Martin makes front-engined grand tourers that prioritise presence and long-distance pace over lap times. The DB nameplate carries most of the brand’s cultural weight; the Vantage is the sharper, shorter-wheelbase alternative, and the DBX brought the marque into the SUV market it needed to survive.
It is one of the very few carmakers whose brand value rests substantially on a film franchise — a connection Aston has spent sixty years both benefiting from and trying not to depend on.
History
Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford founded the company on 15 January 1913. The name joins Martin’s surname to Aston Hill, the hillclimb course where he raced. The defining era began in 1947 when David Brown, a Huddersfield gear manufacturer, bought the company — and Lagonda with it — giving the world the DB series.
The DB5’s appearance in Goldfinger in 1964 made Aston Martin a British cultural fixture rather than merely a small sports car maker. Ownership has changed repeatedly since: Ford from 1987 to 2007, a private consortium led by David Richards, and a London Stock Exchange listing in 2018. Lawrence Stroll’s Yew Tree Consortium, Saudi Arabia’s PIF, Mercedes-Benz Group and Geely are all shareholders today, and Stroll’s rebranding of the Racing Point Formula One team put the name back on a grid in 2021.
