Overview
Audi’s position in the German premium three is the technical one. Where BMW sells driver engagement and Mercedes sells comfort and status, Audi sells engineering — quattro all-wheel drive, aluminium construction, and interiors that have set the class benchmark for cabin quality for the better part of thirty years.
The range runs from the A1 through the A8 flagship, with the Q line covering SUVs and the e-tron badge marking the electric models. RS variants are the fast ones, and they have historically favoured monstrous traction over playfulness.
History
August Horch founded the company on 16 July 1909 in Zwickau after leaving the carmaker that already bore his name. Barred from using "Horch" again, he translated it: the German verb horch (listen) becomes audi in Latin. In 1932 Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer to form Auto Union — the four interlocking rings are those four companies, not model ranges or anything else.
Volkswagen acquired Auto Union in 1964–65 and relaunched the Audi brand; the company was formally renamed Audi AG in 1985 and became a wholly owned VW Group subsidiary in 2020. The single most important product decision was the 1980 Audi Quattro, the first large-scale German production car with permanent all-wheel drive. It rewrote Group B rallying and made all-wheel drive a mainstream expectation on performance cars — a change every rival eventually followed.
Buying a used Audi
German premium depreciation is steep in the first three years, so a used A4, A5 or Q5 puts a genuinely sophisticated car within mainstream-SUV money. S line trim is common in Australia and helps resale.
Service history is the whole game. Audi’s turbocharged engines and dual-clutch S tronic transmissions are durable on schedule and expensive off it, so buy the car with the complete book rather than the cheapest example on the page, and factor a pre-purchase inspection into the budget.
