Overview
Autodelta was Alfa Romeo’s competition department — the works team that took the marque back to the front of sports-car racing in the 1960s and 1970s, and eventually back into Formula One. The name on a car therefore signals a racing pedigree or a car prepared to that pattern, not a separate marque with its own model range.
If you are looking at something badged Autodelta, establish what it actually is: a genuine works or works-supported competition car, a period Alfa built to Autodelta specification, or a later road car wearing the name.
History
Auto-Delta was founded in 1961 by the engineer Carlo Chiti and the Alfa dealer Ludovico Chizzola. Alfa Romeo brought it in-house in March 1963 and renamed it Autodelta SpA, making it the official competition arm of the company. Chiti had joined Alfa Romeo as a student in 1952 and, when the racing department closed mid-decade, moved to Scuderia Ferrari, where he worked on the 156 Sharknose that took Phil Hill’s 1961 title.
The first Autodelta project, launched in June 1962, was the Giulia TZ, which won widely in TZ and TZ2 form. The 33/2 Daytona prototype followed in 1967 and won on debut, going on to victories at Daytona, Le Mans and the Nürburgring. The 33 TT 12 took the 1975 Makes World Championship with wins in seven of eight races, and Autodelta led Alfa Romeo’s Formula One return in 1979 with the 179.
