Overview

Bentley occupies the ground between Rolls-Royce serenity and outright sports car aggression — the "grand tourer" in the most literal sense, a car built to cross a continent quickly and in extraordinary comfort. The Continental GT is the definitive modern Bentley; the Flying Spur is its four-door sibling, and the Bentayga carries the formula into an SUV.

Everything is still assembled at Crewe, and the hand-finished woodwork and hides are a genuine point of difference rather than a marketing line.

History

W.O. Bentley founded the company on 18 January 1919 in Cricklewood, north London. Its reputation was built at Le Mans, where Bentleys won in 1924 and then four years straight from 1927 to 1930, driven by the wealthy British enthusiasts the press christened the "Bentley Boys". Ettore Bugatti’s dismissal of them as "the world’s fastest lorries" has followed the marque ever since.

Rolls-Royce acquired a struggling Bentley in 1931, and for decades afterwards Bentleys were largely rebadged Rolls-Royces. Volkswagen bought the brand for £430 million in 1998 — famously winning the cars and the Crewe factory while BMW secured the Rolls-Royce name — and the independent identity was rebuilt around the 2003 Continental GT. Bentley returned to Le Mans and won again in 2003.
