Overview

Bertone was a Turin design house and coachbuilder rather than a carmaker in the ordinary sense — for most of its life it drew and built bodies for other people’s cars. Its influence on how a supercar is supposed to look is difficult to overstate: the wedge, the scissor door and the impossibly low nose all trace back to this studio.

History

Giovanni Bertone opened a carriage business in Turin in 1912. His son Giuseppe — universally known as Nuccio — turned it into a design powerhouse after the Second World War. Under Nuccio, and with Marcello Gandini at the drawing board, Bertone produced the Lamborghini Miura (1966), the Lamborghini Countach (1971) and the Lancia Stratos (1972) inside six years.

Volume work paid the bills: nearly 140,000 Fiat 850 Spiders were built between 1965 and 1972, and by 1970 the company employed 1,500 people. The manufacturing side declined through the 2000s, the Grugliasco plant was sold to Fiat in 2009, and Bertone filed for bankruptcy in March 2014. The brand was bought in 2020 and relaunched in 2022, with the GB110 hypercar unveiled that December.
