Overview
The Bluecar is a small four-seat, three-door electric car built for the French industrial group Bolloré, designed by Pininfarina and assembled by Cecomp in Bairo, Italy. It is best known as the vehicle behind Autolib’, the Paris electric car-sharing scheme, which is where most of the fleet spent its working life.
Its unusual feature is the battery. Rather than the lithium-ion chemistry used almost everywhere else, the Bluecar runs a 30 kWh lithium metal polymer pack paired with a supercapacitor, quoted at around 250 km of urban range and a 120 km/h top speed. That chemistry has real consequences for servicing and for battery replacement, and it is the first thing to research before buying one.
History
Bolloré and Pininfarina formed a 50-50 joint venture at the start of 2008 to design, develop, build and sell an electric car. A concept appeared at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008 and a definitive prototype at Geneva in March 2009, with the production venture named Véhicule Électriques Pininfarina Bolloré.
The car entered service in December 2011 as part of Autolib’ in Paris, and retail deliveries to private buyers began in March 2012. Bluecars also ran the BlueCity car-sharing scheme in London between 2017 and 2020.
