Overview

Bugatti exists to build the fastest, most technically extreme road cars in the world, in numbers small enough that the engineering budget makes no commercial sense. The Veyron and Chiron established the quad-turbocharged W16 as the brand’s signature — an engine configuration nobody else has attempted in production.

History

Ettore Bugatti, Italian by birth, founded Automobiles Ettore Bugatti in 1909 at Molsheim in Alsace. Roughly 8,000 cars were built in the original company’s lifetime, and their reputation rests on both beauty and results — the Type 35 was one of the most successful racing cars ever made, and the Type 41 Royale and Type 57SC Atlantic remain among the most valuable objects in car collecting. Bugatti won the Monaco Grand Prix in 1929 and Le Mans in 1937 and 1939.

The deaths of Jean Bugatti in 1939 and Ettore in 1947, plus a factory in ruins after the war, ended the original company by about 1952. Romano Artioli revived the name in Italy from 1987 and built the EB110 before the venture collapsed. Volkswagen acquired the brand in 1998, launched the Veyron in 2005 and the Chiron in 2016, and in 2021 folded it into the Bugatti Rimac joint venture with the Croatian electric hypercar maker.
