Overview

Buick is the oldest surviving American car brand and General Motors’ premium-but-not-luxury division — positioned above Chevrolet, below Cadillac. Its modern relevance is largely Chinese: the brand is enormous there, and the great majority of its production goes to that market.

History

David Dunbar Buick founded the business in December 1899. Its early advantage was the overhead-valve engine, which made Buicks faster and more flexible than most rivals in the 1900s. William C. Durant acquired the company in 1904 and turned it into America’s largest automaker by 1908 — success that directly financed his creation of General Motors that same year. Buick is, quite literally, the company GM was built on.

Postwar sales peaked in 1956 at 738,814 cars. The turbocharged Regal Grand National and GNX of the 1980s became legends by beating Corvettes in a straight line, and remain the collectible Buicks. In 2022 the brand committed to an all-electric lineup by 2030.
