Overview
Cadillac is General Motors’ luxury division and, for most of the twentieth century, the American definition of a luxury car — the phrase "the Cadillac of" entered the language as a synonym for the best example of anything. The modern brand is built around the Escalade full-size SUV, the V-Series performance cars, and an electric range led by the Lyriq.
History
Founded on 22 August 1902 from the remains of the Henry Ford Company, and named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French officer who founded Detroit. Henry M. Leland, its first engineer and leader, was a precision-manufacturing obsessive, and Cadillac won the 1908 Dewar Trophy for demonstrating genuine parts interchangeability — a foundational moment for mass production. General Motors acquired it on 29 July 1909.
The list of firsts is long: electric starting and lighting in 1912, a 70-horsepower flathead V8 in 1915, Synchro-Mesh transmission in 1928. The tailfin arrived in 1948 and reached its absurd peak in 1959. Cadillac entered Formula One in 2026, initially with Ferrari engines.
