Overview

Chery is China’s biggest vehicle exporter and has been since 2003 — more than half its sales go overseas. It sells here under its own name and through two export-only sub-brands, Omoda and Jaecoo, which is why a Chery showroom can carry three badges.

History

Founded on 8 January 1997 as a state-owned enterprise by Wuhu city officials in Anhui province. Its export focus was deliberate and early: 937,148 vehicles exported in 2023, 52 per cent of total sales, comfortably beating its own "Double 50" target. It listed in Hong Kong on 25 September 2025, raising about US$1.2 billion, and sold 2.8 million vehicles in 2025 — the fifth-largest carmaker group in China.

The brand portfolio is unusually wide: Chery for the mainstream, Exeed for premium, Jetour for SUVs, iCar for electric, Luxeed with Huawei, and Omoda and Jaecoo for export, both established in April 2023.

In Australia

Chery has now had two goes at Australia. The first attempt in 2011 was short-lived and left a reputation the brand has spent years repairing. The return from 2023 has been far more successful, on the strength of aggressive pricing and long warranties on the Tiggo SUV range.

Buying a used Chery

The used market here is almost entirely post-2023 cars, so warranty is the main thing to check — Chery has competed on long warranty terms, and the balance transfers if servicing has been done on schedule.

Be aware that first-generation Australian Cherys from the 2011 attempt are a different proposition entirely: parts and dealer support for those are effectively gone.
