Overview

Chevrolet is General Motors’ volume brand and one of the most widely sold nameplates on earth, present in more than 140 countries. In Australia the badge is best known through two channels: the Corvette and Silverado sold factory-backed in right-hand drive, and the long tail of Holden-badged Chevrolets that Australians drove for decades without the bowtie ever appearing on the car.

History

Founded on 3 November 1911 by racing driver Louis Chevrolet, his brother Arthur, and William C. Durant — the man who had built General Motors and then been forced out of it. Durant used Chevrolet’s success to buy his way back into control of GM, which absorbed Chevrolet in 1918. The origin of the bowtie emblem, first used in 1914, is still disputed: hotel wallpaper, a coal company logo, and a nod to the Swiss cross have all been claimed.

Chevrolet overtook Ford as America’s best-selling car by 1929, and by 1963 one in every ten cars sold in the United States wore the badge. Two products define its enthusiast reputation: the Corvette, launched in 1953 with a fibreglass body, and the small-block V8 of 1955, the longest continuously produced mass-market engine in history. The Camaro followed in 1966 to fight the Mustang.
