Overview

Chrysler was for most of its history the engineering-led member of Detroit’s Big Three — the company that got there first on hydraulic brakes, on the Hemi, and on the minivan. Today it is a much-reduced brand within Stellantis, and its Australian presence is limited to imported models and a large enthusiast following for older 300 and Valiant-era cars.

History

Walter Chrysler founded the company on 6 June 1925 by reorganising the Maxwell Motor Company, having already launched the technically advanced Chrysler Six in 1924. He built the corporation quickly: Plymouth and DeSoto were both created in 1928, and Dodge Brothers was bought the same year.

The genuine innovations are worth remembering — the first practical mass-produced four-wheel hydraulic brakes, "Floating Power" rubber engine mounts, the first production electronic fuel injection in 1957, and the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager of November 1983, which created the minivan segment outright. Survival has been the other theme: $1.5 billion in US government loan guarantees in 1979, the DaimlerChrysler merger of 1998 and its unwinding, Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 30 April 2009, sale to Fiat in 2014, and absorption into Stellantis in January 2021.
