Cobra Cars is one of many catalogue entries covering recreations of the AC Cobra, with a Daytona coupe also registered. The Cobra is the most copied car in history and a worldwide cottage industry grew up around it, so the badge on the car says far less than the builder and the chassis do.
It is separate from AC Cars of Thames Ditton, the British firm that built the originals and still builds Cobras today.
Buying one in Australia
Ask three questions before anything else: who built the car, what the chassis actually is, and whether the body is bonded to it or riveted on. Quality across Cobra recreations varies enormously and photographs rarely show the difference.
Registration runs through your state or territory’s individually constructed vehicle scheme, with an engineering certificate from an approved engineer. A car imported already built still needs import approval on top of that.
