Overview
Coda was an early American electric car start-up that reached production, sold roughly a hundred cars, and went bankrupt within a year of its first delivery.
History
Founded in 2009 in Los Angeles by Kevin Czinger — later of Czinger Vehicles — and Miles Rubin, raising over $200 million. The Coda sedan adapted a Chinese Hafei platform to a 31 kWh lithium iron phosphate pack, and its EPA-rated 88-mile range was the longest in its class at the time.
Deliveries slipped repeatedly from a December 2010 target and finally began in March 2012, in California only. About 100 cars were sold. The company laid off 125 workers in December 2012 without the required notice, triggering a class action, and filed Chapter 11 on 1 May 2013.
