Overview

Contemporary Classic Motor Car Company, of Mamaroneck, New York, builds 427 Cobra recreations that are widely regarded as among the most accurate produced. The moulds were taken directly from an original 427 S/C, chassis CSX 3045, which is why the proportions read correctly in a class of car where they often do not.

The construction is the differentiator. Inner panels — front wheel arches, floorpan, footbox assembly and boot liner — are double-bonded to the body shell so the body works as a monocoque, rather than being panels riveted to a frame in the manner of a conventional kit.

History

The chassis follows the original round-tube design but uses thicker wall sections, which reduces flex while keeping mass below what a rectangular-tube frame would cost. Cars have been built to individual order since the 1980s, and the company’s output turns up regularly at major collector auctions in its own right rather than as an anonymous replica.

Cobra recreations vary enormously in quality and it is not always obvious from photographs. Ask who built the car and when, whether the body is bonded or riveted, and what the chassis actually is.

Registration here runs through your state or territory’s individually constructed vehicle scheme. A car imported already built still needs import approval, so confirm both the import and engineering paperwork exist before money changes hands.
