Overview

Cruise was General Motors’ self-driving division and, briefly, one of only two companies running a paid driverless taxi service in a major American city. It no longer operates as a robotaxi business.

History

Kyle Vogt and Dan Kan founded Cruise in October 2013; General Motors acquired it in March 2016. The fleet was modified Chevrolet Bolts, and in 2020 the company unveiled the Origin, a purpose-built shuttle with no steering wheel or pedals.

California granted the first Driverless Deployment Permit in June 2022 and paid robotaxi rides began in San Francisco, reaching about 100 vehicles by September 2022. The state suspended Cruise’s permits in October 2023 after safety incidents, Vogt resigned in November 2023, and in December 2024 GM stopped funding the robotaxi business and redirected the work to driver-assistance systems. Cruise was fully merged into GM by February 2025.
