Overview
Cupra is what happens when a performance badge is given its own company. It sells Volkswagen Group hardware — the Leon shares its bones with a Golf, the Born with an ID.3 — in sharper bodywork with a firmer, more aggressive tune and copper detailing everywhere.
The Formentor is the important one: the first car built for Cupra alone rather than adapted from a SEAT.
History
The name comes from "Cup Racing" and first appeared in 1996 on the SEAT Ibiza GTI 2.0 16V Cupra Sport, marking SEAT’s win in the FIA 2-Litre World Rally Cup. It served as SEAT’s performance sub-brand for over two decades before being made a standalone marque on 31 January 2018.
It remains owned by the Volkswagen Group and built by SEAT at Martorell near Barcelona. The Formentor arrived in 2020, the electric Born in 2021 and the Tavascan in 2023 — the first Cupra built outside Europe. Production grew from 81,839 units in 2021 to 246,749 in 2023.
In Australia
Cupra launched in Australia in 2022, arriving without the SEAT brand that spawned it — SEAT itself has never been sold here, so Australians met the performance offshoot first and the parent not at all. That makes the badge unusually unfamiliar for what is, underneath, well-known Volkswagen Group engineering.
