Overview

The DeLorean Motor Company built one car — a stainless-steel-panelled, gull-winged coupe designed by Giugiaro — and became far more famous for the film it appeared in than for anything it achieved commercially. Roughly 9,000 were made.

History

John DeLorean, a genuinely accomplished General Motors engineer and executive, founded the company on 24 October 1975. The factory opened at Dunmurry in Northern Ireland in 1978, a 660,000 square foot plant sited to create employment in a region riven by sectarian conflict, and production began in early 1981.

The car was underpowered for its looks — around 10.5 seconds to 60 mph — and early build quality was poor. Sales reached roughly 6,000 against the 10,000 to 12,000 needed to break even, and Bank of America sued over defaulted loans in March 1982. DeLorean was arrested in an FBI drug-trafficking sting that October and later acquitted on entrapment grounds. Back to the Future, released in 1985, ensured the car outlived the company by decades.
