Overview
Dodge is Stellantis’s performance brand — the one that kept building large, loud, rear-drive muscle cars long after the rest of the industry had moved on. Charger, Challenger and the supercharged Hellcat engines are the reason the badge still means something to enthusiasts.
History
Horace and John Dodge set up a Detroit machine shop in 1900, supplying parts to other carmakers — including Ford — before building their own car, the Model 30-35, in 1914. Both brothers died in 1920. The company was sold to Dillon, Read & Co. for $146 million in 1925 and to Chrysler for $170 million in 1928.
The performance era began with the Red Ram Hemi V8 in the early 1950s and peaked with the Coronet and Charger of 1965 to 1976 and the 1970 Challenger. The 1983 Caravan invented the minivan. Ram trucks were split off as their own brand in 2011, leaving Dodge to concentrate on performance cars.
