Overview
EV Innovations, better known through most of its life as Li-ion Motors, was an American electric-vehicle developer working on battery-electric drivetrains at a point when very few companies were. It is remembered mainly for two vehicles: the Wave II and the Inizio.
The Wave II won the Progressive Automotive X Prize in the Alternative Side-by-Side class in September 2010 — a genuine, externally judged result rather than a company claim, and the reason the name still appears in electric-vehicle histories.
History
The company was founded in 2000, with its corporate base in Las Vegas, Nevada and research, development and manufacturing at Mooresville, North Carolina, working on lithium-ion propulsion systems for road vehicles.
The Inizio was announced as an all-American electric supercar with a quoted 250-mile range, a 170 mph top speed and 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, priced at 139,000 US dollars and slated for a mid-2011 launch. As with several electric start-ups of that era, the announced production did not translate into volume, so surviving cars are prototypes and very early examples rather than series-production vehicles.
