Overview

Excalibur invented the neo-classic: a brand-new car styled to look like a 1920s or 1930s exotic, on modern running gear. Whatever you think of the genre, this is where it started.

History

Industrial designer Brooks Stevens created the original for Studebaker in 1964, styled after the 1928 Mercedes-Benz SSK, then set up his own company to build it. Over 3,500 were made in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1965, with the main production run ending in 1990 and a final car built in 1997.

Mechanically they were straightforward: Chevrolet 327 V8s in Series I and II, 454 and 305 engines in Series III and IV, and later the Corvette LT1. The company went bankrupt in 1986 and again in 1990, with German investors attempting revivals from 1992.
