Overview
The Happy Messenger is a Chinese city car built under licence from Daihatsu, sharing its platform with the second-generation Daihatsu Move — the Mira chassis under a taller body. It was powered by a one-litre four-cylinder producing 55 horsepower with a five-speed manual gearbox.
The badge history is confusing and worth untangling. The car was built by Huali, a subsidiary of the Chinese state manufacturer FAW, and the Huali brand was later renamed FAW-Jiaxing, which is why the same vehicle appears under more than one name.
History
Huali built the Happy Messenger from 2003 to 2008, after which it continued for several years at FAW Hongta Yunnan, a light commercial vehicle plant, sold through FAW Jilin’s network under the FAW Jiaxing name.
It travelled further than most Chinese cars of its generation. The Happy Messenger was exported to Egypt and to several Eastern European markets, mostly badged as the FAW Angel, and reached the United States in electric form as the Miles ZX40.
Buying one in Australia
This model was never sold new in Australia, so an example here has been imported privately and needs import approval and compliance paperwork. Confirm those exist before anything else.
Parts are the practical constraint. Because the car is a licensed Daihatsu Move underneath, some mechanical components cross-reference to that vehicle, but body panels, trim and Chinese-specific parts have no local supply at all.
