Overview
Ferrari is the most valuable name in motoring, and the only carmaker whose racing team is older than the company itself. Production is deliberately constrained, the waiting lists are managed as carefully as the cars, and the result is a marque whose models frequently hold or gain value — a near-unique position in the industry.
History
Enzo Ferrari founded Scuderia Ferrari as a racing team in 1929, while still running Alfa Romeo’s competition programme. The company itself began on 13 September 1939 as Auto Avio Costruzioni, took the Ferrari name in 1945, and built its first car — the 125 S — in 1947 at Maranello, where it remains.
Scuderia Ferrari is Formula One’s oldest and most successful team, with 16 constructors’ and 15 drivers’ championships. The prancing horse came from the fuselage of Francesco Baracca, a First World War flying ace; his mother suggested Enzo adopt it for luck in 1932. Fiat took 50 per cent in 1969 and 90 per cent after Enzo’s death in 1988; Ferrari was spun off from Fiat Chrysler in 2016 and is now listed publicly, with Exor and Piero Ferrari the largest holders.
