Overview
Fiat is Italy’s national carmaker and, for over a century, the company that put ordinary Italians on wheels. Its speciality is the small car done with charm — the 500 is the emblem, and the brand has won nine European Car of the Year titles, more than any other manufacturer.
History
Founded in Turin on 11 July 1899 by Giovanni Agnelli and a group of investors. The name is an acronym: Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. The first car, the 3½ HP, appeared in 1900.
The mass-motorisation models are the ones that matter — the 500 "Topolino" of 1936, the Nuova 500 of 1957, and the 124 and 128, both European Car of the Year winners. Beyond Italy, Fiat became the market leader in Brazil for years. The company merged with Chrysler Group in 2014 to form FCA, and FCA merged with France’s PSA Group in January 2021 to create Stellantis.
