Overview
Fisker is the name Danish designer Henrik Fisker put on two separate electric-car ventures, both of which ended in bankruptcy. The cars themselves were widely praised for their styling — Fisker had previously penned the BMW Z8 and Aston Martin DB9 — and criticised for their software and support.
History
Fisker Automotive was founded in 2007 and built the Karma, a plug-in hybrid luxury sedan, delivering around 2,000 cars from 2011. Production stopped in 2012 when battery supplier A123 Systems went bankrupt; the assets were bought by China’s Wanxiang Group in 2014 and became Karma Automotive, with Henrik Fisker retaining rights to his own name.
Fisker Inc. followed on 3 October 2016, listing via SPAC in October 2020 at a $2.9 billion valuation. Its all-electric Ocean SUV reached customers in 2023 but was dogged by power-loss incidents, three NHTSA investigations and severe internal disorganisation. The company filed Chapter 11 on 17 June 2024, and remaining Ocean inventory was sold off at around $14,000 a car.
