Overview
Genesis is Hyundai Motor Group’s luxury brand, and unusually for a new premium marque it has led with design rather than technology claims. The house style it calls "Athletic Elegance" — twin-line lighting, long bonnets, restrained cabins in unusual materials — is coherent enough that the cars are recognisable at a glance, which is more than several established rivals manage.
Sedans use G numbering (G70, G80, G90) and SUVs GV (GV60, GV70, GV80), with electric versions of most.
History
Genesis began as a Hyundai model — a rear-drive luxury sedan launched in 2008 — before being spun out as a standalone brand on 4 November 2015. The first standalone model, the G90, was announced that December. Expansion followed to the United States in late 2016 and Europe in May 2021, and cumulative global sales passed 1.5 million in November 2025.
The design leadership is the story. Luc Donckerwolke, previously responsible for Lamborghini and Bentley design, is chief creative officer, having joined the group alongside Peter Schreyer. Genesis committed in 2021 to launching only electric or fuel-cell vehicles after 2025.
