Overview
Geo was General Motors’ answer to the Japanese small-car invasion of the late 1980s: rather than engineer its own subcompacts, GM sold rebadged Suzukis, Toyotas and Isuzus through Chevrolet dealers under a new name. The engineering was sound because it was not GM’s.
History
Launched in August 1989 as a Chevrolet subdivision. The Metro was a Suzuki Swift, the Prizm a Toyota Corolla built at the GM–Toyota NUMMI plant in California, the Storm an Isuzu Impulse, and the Tracker a Suzuki Sidekick from the CAMI joint venture in Ontario. The badge was retired in mid-1997 and the surviving models continued as Chevrolets, the Tracker until 2004.
