Overview

GMC is General Motors’ trucks-and-utility brand, sitting above Chevrolet and below Cadillac. Mechanically its vehicles are close cousins of the Chevrolet equivalents; the difference is trim, presentation and the Denali sub-brand, which has quietly become one of GM’s most profitable products.

History

The roots go back to the Grabowsky Motor Company of 1900, which became Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1902 and was acquired by William Durant’s General Motors in 1909. General Motors Truck Company was formed in 1911 by consolidating Rapid with Reliance.

GMC and Chevrolet have shared platforms since 1920, with GMC historically marketed to commercial buyers and Chevrolet to private ones — a strategy that has made the shared truck platform GM’s most profitable. In 2020 the Hummer nameplate returned as a GMC sub-brand rather than a standalone division.

In Australia

GMC arrived in Australia and New Zealand in 2025, with the Yukon Denali leading the range in factory-backed right-hand drive. Before that, GMC pickups reached Australia only through independent conversions, so early local examples vary considerably in engineering quality — check who did the conversion and whether it holds the relevant compliance approval.
