Overview
Gullwing International Cars builds recreations of the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing to a standard well above the rest of that field. The bodywork is formed from GLARE — bonded layers of fibreglass and aluminium — over a welded square-tube frame, and the patterns came from Mercedes-Benz itself.
These are not cheap cars and were never meant to be. Values have run around half a million dollars, which places them above many genuine classics and most modern supercars, and well above the general run of 300SL replicas.
History
The company was founded in the 1980s by Anton Ostermeier, a 300SL owner and former Mercedes-Benz employee, with the explicit aim of taking the idea of a 300SL recreation beyond what the term replica usually implies. He used his own 300SL and factory-sourced patterns to develop the bodywork.
The result sits in an unusual position: a recreation good enough to be catalogued and auctioned under its builder’s name rather than sold anonymously as a copy.
