Overview
GWM — Great Wall Motor — is a Chinese specialist in exactly the two segments Australians buy most: utes and SUVs. It was the country’s seventh best-selling brand in 2025 with 52,809 sales, up 23.4 per cent, and Australia has been its largest export market since 2021.
It sells here under several sub-brands: Haval for SUVs, Tank for serious off-roaders, Ora for small electric cars, and GWM itself on the Cannon and Ute ranges.
History
Founded in 1984 and based at Baoding in Hebei province. It built its business on pickup trucks before expanding into SUVs, and now sits among the top ten Chinese manufacturers with 1.23 million vehicles sold globally in 2024 and 453,141 exported.
The sub-brands arrived in sequence: Haval for SUVs in 2013, Wey for luxury crossovers in 2017, Ora for electric vehicles in 2018 and Tank for off-roaders in 2021.
