Overview

Haval is GWM’s SUV brand and the volume half of the business — the H6 and the smaller Jolion are the cars most Australians actually mean when they say GWM. The proposition is a lot of equipment, a long warranty and a sharp price.

History

The name comes from the Great Wall Haval CUV of April 2005, one of the earliest compact SUVs from a Chinese manufacturer. Haval was spun out as a standalone brand in March 2013. The H6, launched in 2011 at around 100,000 yuan, made it China’s best-selling SUV brand for nine consecutive years to 2018, and the five millionth Haval was built in January 2019.

Haval entered Australia in March 2015 and had 68 dealerships here by February 2024.

Buying a used Haval

Warranty is the headline: check what remains, and that the service book supports it. Earlier Havals from the 2015–2018 period are a noticeably less polished product than current ones, so judge each generation on its own rather than on the brand’s current reputation.
