Overview

Honda is an engine company that also makes cars. It is the world’s largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines by unit count — more than 14 million a year across cars, motorcycles, generators, mowers and outboards — and the largest motorcycle manufacturer on earth, a position it has held since 1959.

That engineering bias shows in the products. VTEC variable valve timing, high-revving naturally aspirated engines, and chassis that punch above their segment are the recurring Honda signatures, from the Civic Type R down to an ordinary CR-V.

History

Soichiro Honda started the business in October 1946 in a small shack, fitting war-surplus engines to bicycles; the company was incorporated on 24 September 1948. Motorcycles came first and dominated — 500 million built by May 2025.

Cars arrived in August 1963 with the T360 mini pickup, followed two months later by the S500 sports car. The Civic launched in 1972 and has been in continuous production since. The 1991 NSX proved a Japanese company could build a supercar that Ferrari and Porsche had to take seriously, and it introduced VTEC to a wider audience. Honda has competed in Formula One across four separate eras and powered Max Verstappen’s 2021 drivers’ championship.

Buying a used Honda

Hondas reward buyers who read the service book. The engines are famously long-lived when oil changes have been kept up and famously unforgiving when they have not — particularly the VTEC and turbocharged units.

Civic, CR-V, Accord and Jazz are the volume used models here and are cheap to run through both the dealer network and a deep independent specialist base. Type R and older S2000 and Integra Type R models have appreciated sharply, so verify originality and check for track use before paying enthusiast money.
