Overview
Hummer is the civilian descendant of the American military Humvee, and for a decade it was the most conspicuous vehicle on any road. The badge died in 2010 and returned in 2020 in the least likely form imaginable — an electric pickup and SUV sold under the GMC brand.
History
AM General began selling a civilian version of the military M998 Humvee in 1992. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who had seen an army convoy while filming in Oregon, campaigned for a consumer model and bought the first two H1s sold. General Motors acquired the brand name in December 1999 and added the smaller H2 and H3; the H1 ran until 2006.
Rising fuel prices and the financial crisis ended it. A sale to China’s Sichuan Tengzhong collapsed in February 2010, and the last H3 was built at Shreveport on 24 May 2010. After a $2.2 billion investment in GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant, the nameplate returned for the 2022 model year as the GMC Hummer EV.
