Overview

INEOS Automotive exists because one man wanted to buy a car nobody would build any more. The Grenadier is an unapologetically old-fashioned body-on-frame 4x4 with solid axles, a two-speed transfer case and BMW straight-six power — a Defender in spirit, built new.

It has found a real audience in Australia among people who use a four-wheel drive rather than commute in one.

History

Sir Jim Ratcliffe founded the company in 2016 as a subsidiary of the INEOS chemicals group. He had wanted to replace his own Land Rover Defender; when Jaguar Land Rover declined to sell him the production tooling after the original Defender’s 67-year run ended in January 2016, he started "Projekt Grenadier" instead. The car is named after the Grenadier pub in Belgravia, London, where the idea was hatched.

Production was originally planned for Bridgend in Wales but moved to the former Smart factory at Hambach in France, bought from Mercedes-Benz. Magna Steyr helped engineer it and BMW supplies the engines. Mass production began in October 2022. The Quartermaster ute followed; a planned smaller electric Fusilier was cancelled in July 2024.
