Overview
Infiniti was Nissan’s luxury division — the third Japanese premium brand, launched a few years after Acura and in the same month as Lexus. Its best cars were genuinely good, particularly the rear-drive G-series sedans and coupes that shared their bones with the Nissan Skyline, but the brand never built the identity its rivals did.
Infiniti has withdrawn from Australia, so local cars are used only.
History
Launched on 8 November 1989 with the Q45 sedan and M30 coupe. The logo is meant to read as a road running to the horizon and as Mount Fuji. Early advertising was so committed to Zen imagery that it declined to show the cars, and sales suffered accordingly.
The turnaround came around 2000 with a pivot to sporty luxury. The G35 won Motor Trend Car of the Year in 2003 and had the brand briefly described as "the Japanese BMW". Expansion into Europe in 2008 was reversed in 2019, and the brand also exited Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong to concentrate on China, the Middle East and North America.
Buying a used Infiniti
With no local dealer network, servicing falls to Nissan specialists and independents — which is manageable, because the mechanical hardware is largely shared with Nissan. The VQ V6 in particular is a well-understood engine with good parts supply.
Confirm parts availability for brand-specific trim and electronics before buying, and expect a smaller buyer pool when you come to sell.
