Overview

Isuzu is a diesel and commercial-vehicle specialist that happens to sell two extremely popular passenger vehicles in Australia. It has built more than 20 million diesel engines, and that focus is precisely the appeal: the D-MAX ute and MU-X seven-seat SUV are bought by people who want a simple, tough, tow-capable diesel rather than the newest technology.

Isuzu Ute Australia finished ninth among all brands in 2025 with 42,297 sales — remarkable for a two-model range.

History

The company’s roots go back to a 1916 automotive venture by Tokyo Ishikawajima; it was formally founded on 30 March 1934 and took the Isuzu name in 1949, after the river near the Ise Grand Shrine. The word translates as "fifty bells".

General Motors acquired 34 per cent in 1972 and raised that to 49 per cent by 1999 before divesting entirely in 2006. Isuzu stopped building passenger cars in 2002 and left the US consumer market in January 2009, concentrating on trucks and on the pickup business it has dominated in Thailand since 1966. The D-MAX arrived in 2002, the MU-X in 2013.

Buying a used Isuzu

Buy a D-MAX or MU-X the way you would buy any working diesel. Look for a complete service history with regular oil changes, inspect the underbody on anything that has been used off-road, and take heavy towing seriously — check the tow bar, the transmission fluid condition and the state of the rear suspension.

The reward is a drivetrain with a deserved reputation for longevity and a strong resale position. Isuzus hold value well here, so bargains are rare; you are paying for the running costs you will not have.
