Overview
Jaguar’s historic formula was "grace, space, pace" — luxury cars and sports cars that undercut their German and Italian rivals substantially while looking more expensive than either. The E-Type is routinely called the most beautiful car ever made, and Enzo Ferrari is said to have agreed.
The modern range — XE, XF, F-Pace, F-Type, I-Pace — is being wound down as the brand repositions as an electric-only marque from 2026.
History
William Lyons and William Walmsley founded the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922. It became SS Cars in 1934 and used "Jaguar" as a model name from September 1935; the company took the name outright in 1945, Lyons noting that unlike "SS" it could not be confused with anything foreign.
The XK120 of 1948 and the E-Type of 1961 made the reputation, and Le Mans wins in 1951, 1953 and 1955–57 with the C-Type and D-Type backed it up. Ownership passed through British Motor Holdings, British Leyland and nationalisation, a 1984 stock market listing, Ford in 1990, and Tata Motors in 2008 for £1.7 billion. Jaguar Land Rover announced in February 2021 that Jaguar would become fully electric.
Buying a used Jaguar
Jaguars depreciate hard, which makes a three-to-five-year-old XF or F-Pace exceptional value in absolute terms. The aluminium-intensive construction is durable, but repairs need a shop equipped for it — worth confirming before you buy, particularly outside capital cities.
As with any European luxury car, service history and a pre-purchase inspection are the difference between a bargain and a project. Older XJ and XK models are cheap to buy and not cheap to own; budget accordingly.
