Overview
Jeep is the original off-road brand, and the Wrangler remains the most direct descendant of a Second World War military vehicle still in production anywhere. Solid axles, a separate chassis and removable doors and roof are not nostalgia — they are what the vehicle is for.
The wider range spans the Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Compass and Gladiator, with varying degrees of genuine off-road capability.
History
In 1940–41 the US Army approached 135 companies for a light reconnaissance vehicle; only American Bantam and Willys-Overland responded seriously. The Willys MB became the standard, with Ford building identical vehicles as the GPW — about 640,000 between them. The name’s origin is still argued: the "GP" designation is the popular theory, though "Eugene the Jeep", a Popeye character who solved impossible problems, has its advocates.
Willys-Overland began civilian CJ production in Toledo, Ohio in 1945. The brand then passed through Kaiser Jeep (1953), American Motors (1970), Chrysler (1987) and now Stellantis. The Wagoneer of 1963 is widely regarded as the first luxury 4x4, and the XJ Cherokee of 1984 effectively invented the compact SUV.
Buying a used Jeep
Buy on maintenance evidence rather than kilometres. Jeep’s reliability record in Australia has been patchy, particularly on the Compass and older Grand Cherokee, and the difference between a good and a bad example is almost entirely how it was serviced.
On any Wrangler or off-road-modified vehicle, inspect the underbody, check for water ingress around the roof and door seals, and look closely at suspension and steering components for wear from lift kits or oversized tyres.
